Physicians emerging from residency and fellowship training won’t suffer from lack of job opportunities, no matter their specialty. But the data shows increased competition among health care employers for jobs in some specialty roles.

“Even if it’s not a shortage area per se, if 70% of health care organizations are searching for [a particular physician], it becomes a very competitive specialty,” said Carey Goryl, CEO of the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment (AAPPR), a professional organization of internal physician and health-professional recruitment professionals.

Survey data from thousands of searches conducted by AAPPR members reveals information that physicians emerging from residency or fellowship training can use in their transition to practice, including:

  • What physician jobs most health care employers are seeking to fill.
  • Which physician specialties have the most sheer number of open roles.
  • Which physician positions wind up filled most often after a year or less of searching.
  • Advice and resources from the AMA to help guide your physician job search.
