The 2025 Interim Meeting of the AMA Academic Physicians Section (APS) was held Nov. 14 in National Harbor, Maryland with approximately 45 academic physician members in attendance from various institutions across the country.

Your Powerful Ally

The AMA is your powerful ally, focused on addressing the issues important to you, so you can focus on what matters most—patients. We will meet this challenge together.

Education & updates

APS presented an education session, “Optimizing Your Role as a Health Care Advocate.” This session covered the ethical and professional responsibilities of physician advocates along with common barriers and facilitators for effective advocacy. Further, the session will explore storytelling, preparing future leaders for advocacy, best practices for navigating changes in medical education, and continuing scholarly research. Attendees had an opportunity to discuss strategies for developing a personal advocacy plan that aligns with their professional values, institutional resources and target populations.

The panelists were Hans Arora, MD, AMPAC Board of Directors; Ally Perleoni, director, Government Relations, Association of American Medical Colleges; Whitney Sambhariya, MD, PhD, Medical Justice Advocacy fellow; and Margot Savoy, MD, MPH, senior vice president, Education, Inclusiveness and Physician Well-Being, American Academy of Family Physicians. Murali Ankem, MD, APS chair-elect and APS Education Committee chair, served as the moderator.

APS members had an opportunity to learn more about the work of the AMA from our Board of Trustees Liaisons as well as special presentations from the Council on Medical Education, Med Ed, AMA Alliance and AMPAC.

The APS also recognized members of its education, policy, and member engagement committees.

APS resolutions & reports

APS authored Resolution 203, “Restore and Enhance Federal Loan Programs for Medical Education.” Additionally, the APS was a co-sponsor for WPS Resolution 911, “Safeguarding NIH-Funded and Other Women’s Health Research in Peer-Reviewed Publishing.”

The APS meeting also featured a policy discussion that included a review of the House of Delegates (HOD) Handbook and a dialogue on future resolution ideas.
