The Academic Physicians Section (APS) offers its members various opportunities to be involved and advocate for patients and the profession.
APS Governing Council
The strategy and activities of the APS are directed by a nine-member governing council elected by section membership. The next regularly scheduled APS Governing Council elections will be held at the 2026 APS Annual Meeting.
APS committees
The APS committees provide opportunities for leadership development while advancing the goals of the section. The APS has three standing committees:
Member Engagement Committee
The goal of the newly formed APS Member Engagement Committee is to contribute to section growth and member involvement while considering the diverse interests and experiences of APS members. Committee members will be requested to serve one-year terms that expire upon conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD). Members are eligible to serve a maximum of two one-year terms. Service on the inaugural committee will not count towards the term limit.
During their term, committee members will:
- Assist with planning for section member events and activities (e.g., networking event held in conjunction with annual and interim meetings).
- Contribute, as appropriate, to outreach efforts to potential APS members and provide support/mentorship to new section members.
- Identify opportunities to help foster connection with APS members and provide opportunities for collaboration with other AMA sections where appropriate.
Applications for the inaugural committee are due Sept. 10, 2025, at 8 a.m. Central.
Education Committee
The goal of the APS Education Committee is to provide content focused on topics related to issues impacting academic physicians while reflecting the diverse needs and experiences of APS members. Committee members will be requested to serve one-year terms that expire upon conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD). Members are eligible to serve a maximum of two one-year terms.
During their term, committee members will:
- Share ideas and insights to inform education programming for the section.
- Assist with development of learning objectives.
- Identify potential speakers for education programming.
Committee applications for the 2026-27 term will open Feb. 1, 2026.
Policy Committee
The goal of the APS Policy Committee is to create impactful policy that reflects the concerns of academic physicians and contributes to the work of the AMA. Committee members will be requested to serve one-year terms that expire upon conclusion of HOD. Members are eligible to serve a maximum of two one-year terms.
During their term, committee members will:
- Review HOD reports and resolutions for topics impacting academic physicians and propose a course of action.
