Even when well intended, overinterpreting or misinterpreting regulatory requirements can lead to extra work and unneeded documentation. Clinicians and practice leaders who ask why they have to do a process in a certain way often hear the same explanation: “It’s a regulatory requirement.”

When you hear this, respond with: “Please show me that regulation and where it comes from.” The answer may improve everyone’s understanding and often helps identify unneeded processes or rules.
