The 2025 Annual Meeting of the AMA Academic Physicians Section (APS) was held June 6 in Chicago, Illinois, with approximately 55 academic physician members in attendance from academic institutions across the country.

Your Powerful Ally

The AMA is your powerful ally, focused on addressing the issues important to you, so you can focus on what matters most—patients. We will meet this challenge together.

The APS and AMA Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS) presented an education session, “The Influence of Private Equity and Corporate Investment on Academic Medicine.” This session covered various aspects of private equity and corporate investment in medicine. The panelists for this session were: Joshua Gottlieb, professor, Harris Public Policy, University of Chicago; Robert McNamara, MD, FAAEM, professor and chair, emergency medicine, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University; Joseph Dov Bruch, PhD, assistant professor of public health sciences, University of Chicago; and Richard Levenstein, JD, Nason Yeager. Gary Gaddis, MD, APS member at-large, and Martin Trichtinger, MD, OMSS member at-large, served as the moderators.

APS members had an opportunity to learn more about the work of the AMA from the Board of Trustees liaisons, members of AMA ChangeMedEd and AMA advocacy.

The APS also recognized members of its education and policy committees.

APS authored Resolution 406: Call for Study: Should Petroleum-Powered Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Vehicles in Urban Service Areas be Replaced by Renewably-Powered Electric Vehicles, which will be considered during the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD).

The meeting also featured a policy discussion that included a review of the HOD Handbook and a dialogue on future resolution ideas.

The APS elected Murali Ankem, MD, as the chair-elect. Drs. Suzanne Allen, Subhash Chandra and Tochi Iroku-Malize were elected as the new members at-large. Outgoing governing council members Jose Manuel de la Rosa, MD, and Gary Gaddis, MD, were recognized for their contributions and many years of service to the APS.

APS is the home within the AMA for academic physicians, providing an opportunity to influence AMA policy, learn about topics of interest to academic physicians, and connect with peers across the country. APS membership is open to any AMA member who meets one of three criteria:

  • Appointed by the dean of a U.S. medical school to represent the institution; or
  • Holds a faculty appointment at a U.S. medical school; or
  • Does not hold a faculty appointment at a U.S. medical school but has an active role in medical education or serves in a clinical/research capacity with an academic medical center, community hospital, or other health care setting.
