The Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) has 2 primary responsibilities. Through its policy development function, it maintains and updates the 169-year-old AMA Code of Medical Ethics. In its judicial function, it promotes adherence to the Code’s professional ethical standards.
Modernizing the AMA Code of Medical Ethics
In 2008 CEJA launched a major project to critically review and update the AMA Code of Medical Ethics, incorporating feedback from across the medical community in reviewing the code for clarity, timeliness and consistency. CEJA’s goal is to preserve the AMA’s legacy of leadership in professional ethics while ensuring that the Code remains relevant in the face of changes in biomedical science and conditions of medical practice. A new, more intuitive chapter structure and a uniform, easy-to-read format makes the updated Code more accessible.
