Membership Milestones and commissions structure
AMA campus sections can be eligible for additional recognition and resources by achieving Membership Milestones with new member recruitment! As campus sections achieve new Membership Milestones, recognition and funding opportunities through commissions also grow. Membership Milestones are calculated based on the number of first year medical students who join the AMA with a 4-year student membership during the MSOP recruitment program year (May 1–April 30).

Commissions 101
The commissions funding structure is determined by a campus’ Membership Milestones and the percentage of the first-year class size who joins the AMA through campus section outreach. So, as a campus section achieves new Membership Milestones with a higher the percentage of the first-year class joining the AMA with a 4-year membership through campus section outreach, the more commission dollars a campus section receives. While the final commissions amount is determined at the end of the cycle, outreach leaders can track commission-eligibility during the year through the MSOP Dashboard.
Use these funds to continue to grow AMA membership on your campus through creative recruiting programs, section development, travel to AMA meetings, community service, and other professional events. Email MSOP staff at [email protected] if you are unsure how to use these funds.
How are commissions distributed?
Commission funds are distributed to eligible campus sections based on recruitment efforts twice a year—once in the fall and once in the spring.
- Fall: All commission-eligible AMA membership applications and dues received by December 1, will be applied toward the first round of commissions. Commission checks will be processed and mailed in February.
- Spring: All commission-eligible AMA membership applications and dues received by April 30 will be applied toward the second round of commissions. The spring payout is determined by the percent of first-year class size recruited, minus the amount previously paid to the section for the fall campaign. Commission checks will be processed and mailed in June.
All medical student memberships at medical schools with multiple campuses will roll up into the main campuses. Outreach leaders at satellite campuses are encouraged to connect with the main campus outreach leaders to discuss usage of commission dollars. In cases where commissions are sent to a partner, the outreach leader should connect directly with that partner.
