WPS Governing Council
The Women Physicians Section (WPS) has five governing council positions up for election during the 2026 election cycle.
- Alternate delegate (two-year term, 2026-2028)
- Member at-large (two-year term, 2026-2028)
- *Medical Student Section representative (one-year term, 2026-2027)
- *Resident & Fellow Section representative (two-year term, 2026-2028)
- *Young Physicians Section representative (two-year term, 2026-2028)
- **American Medical Women’s Association representative (two-year term, 2026-2028)
*Active AMA members may apply for the three section representative positions by completing the application. Deadline is March 15, 2026. Each sending section will endorse at least one candidate. This endorsement will be delineated on the WPS ballot in April 2026.
**External organizations such as AMWA nominate an individual to serve as their representative on the WPS Governing Council. As such, these positions are not included on the application, however, WPS members will have the opportunity to vote to approve such nominations on the WPS ballot in April 2026.
Terms for each position begin at the conclusion of the 2026 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in June 2026.

Growing the Representation and Reach of Women Leaders (GRROWL), aims to advance women in leadership positions by addressing barriers and promoting leadership development.
WPS HOD Handbook Review Committees
WPS House of Delegates (HOD) Handbook Review Committees convene prior to each WPS business meeting to review items of business under consideration by the AMA HOD. Contact WPS to learn more.
WPS associates
WPS associates are appointed by their state or specialty medical societies to serve as liaisons between WPS and their appointing organizations. This network of women leaders is instrumental in implementing WPS activities at the local level and advancing women in leadership positions. Learn more and apply to be a WPS associate.
Joan F. Giambalvo Fund for the Advancement of Women
Presented by WPS in conjunction with the AMA Foundation, the Joan F. Giambalvo Fund for the Advancement of Women provides scholarships of up to $10,000 to support research advancing the study of women in the medical profession and strengthening the AMA's ability to identify and address the issues affecting women physicians and medical students. Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award
The WPS Inspiration Award provides the opportunity for members to acknowledge and honor physicians who have offered their time, wisdom and support throughout the member's professional career. These individuals may have steered others into a specialty they love, helped them find work/life balance, guided them through a professional society or served as an important role model. Learn more.
