A note from the new YPS chair

July 2024

From YPS Chair Sam Mathis, MD, MBA

Greetings colleagues,

I am excited to represent you this year as the YPS chair. For those who don’t know me, I am a family medicine physician working in an academic center on an island in the Gulf of Mexico, one hour south of Houston, Texas.

I actively see patients and am involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education, serving as a school of medicine faculty member and fellowship director for an integrative medicine fellowship.

Integrative medicine lets me do all the fun stuff I didn’t learn in med school (herbs, supplements, acupuncture, etc.). I’ve been an active member of the AMA since medical school and have been engaged with the sections since starting my journey in the AMA.

YPS members & news highlights

Check the list of additional monthly issues of YPS member news for details on the section's advocacy efforts, leadership opportunities, education, member profiles and more.

Feedback wanted

We have a lot going on in our section and with our members. One of my goals for this year is to hear from you. The young physician voice is so vital to the future of medicine. To better engage as your representative, I want your feedback on important issues like:

  • What excites you about the AMA?
  • What do we need to improve on?
  • What do you see as the future of our section?

YPS strategic plan

Membership Moves Medicine™

  • Thousands of free CME opportunities to fulfill state requirements
  • A powerful voice fighting for you during uncertain times
  • Research, resources, events and more from the largest physician organization

As you are aware, there are some impending changes occurring within the leadership of the association as well as in the AMA House of Delegates. Next month, the YPS Governing Council will meet to review and update our strategic plan for the next year and your input is vital to ensure we are representing you well. Please contact me or any governing council member to share your thoughts.

Another goal for this next year is to highlight the amazing work our members are doing. If you know a YPS member who should be highlighted (even if that member is yourself), please let me know. I want to spotlight some of our leaders within the section.

Finally, I want to say "thank you". Thank you for showing up. Thank you for coming to work each day to care for people. Thank you for doing the work to advocate for all patients on a local, state and national level. It may not always feel like it, but you are making an impact.

Again, I am honored to serve you this next year and represent young physicians across our country. This is going to be a fun year.
