Pulmonary medicine focuses on the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs and related organs. Critical care medicine is concerned with the diagnosis, management, and prevention of complications in patients who are severely ill and who usually require intensive monitoring and/or organ system support. Pulmonary disease and critical care medicine fellowships provide advanced education to allow fellows to acquire competence in these subspecialties with sufficient expertise to act as an independent consultant.
