Annual Meeting

2023 Annual Meeting of the HOD: Jan. 11 Speakers' Update

. 5 MIN READ

Your speakers wish to thank everyone for your hard work at our annual meeting. Much was accomplished. We hope you enjoyed the Aloha spirit and were able to thank our past presidents, Bailey and Harmon, for their service to our AMA.

Your board of trustees has been reviewing the future of House of Delegates meetings. Over the past several years, the House has grown as a result of increased representation by students, residents and specialty societies (based on HOD policymaking, the number of specialty delegates matches the number of state delegates) and by membership growth. Expanding our representation within the House is a good thing, but this growth has created a challenge in our meeting venues due to the lack of availability of adequate meeting space. While your board continues to review the options for future meetings, your speakers note that this growth affects current meetings as well.

Anticipating a large volume of business for Annual 2022, the board of trustees opted to move the Opening Session of the House to Friday evening. This worked well to accommodate our business and alleviated meeting space congestion. Your speakers heard positive feedback from many members of our House regarding this change. After reviewing options for Annual 2023 at their recent meeting, the board decided to change the meeting dates for Annual 2023 to begin on Friday, June 9

Reference committee hearings

Your speakers believe the Friday start will not only lessen meeting room challenges but also offers additional advantages. It will provide an opportunity for delegations/caucuses to schedule their meetings on Saturday morning, allowing them time to review the “Saturday Tote” before reference committee hearings. Our traditional schedule allows little time for delegations/caucuses to fully consider resolutions contained in the “Sunday Tote” before reference committee hearings begin. Given the Friday start, your speakers plan to schedule reference committee hearings on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Reference committee reports will be available by Monday morning (hopefully even Sunday afternoon), to allow plenty of time for review before the House convenes. This new schedule allows sectional members increased time for interaction with their state and specialty delegations, to provide their input into caucus deliberations and enhance their mentorship. In addition, this modified schedule has dedicated time for the Health Equity Open Forum, as requested by House action.

Livestream

As with Annual 2022, the Friday Opening Session of the House will be livestreamed and only include votes accomplished by acclamation. As was done at both Annual and Interim 2022, all reference committee hearings and sessions of the House will be livestreamed.

Your speakers hope that this schedule change will be welcomed by the House and look forward to your feedback, following the meeting. We are sending this notification to allow maximum time for planning. A tentative schedule is included below.

Pursuant to Policy G-610.020. Attached is the current Official Candidate Notification for the 2023 AMA Elections, current as of Jan. 8, 2023. Individuals considering becoming a candidate for any of the existing open or potentially newly open positions are encouraged to send an email with an electronic announcement card to [email protected] notifying us of your intention to be a candidate.

Our campaign rules state that individuals are not allowed to independently send materials (this includes announcements of candidacy) to members of the House of Delegates prior to the start of “active campaigning,” which will begin after the April board of trustees meeting.

As per the action of the House of Delegates at Interim 2022. The election committee will be expanded from seven members to nine. Accordingly, your speakers are seeking volunteers. As a reminder, applicants must attest that they will not be a candidate or serve on a campaign team during their tenure on the committee. Members are appointed for one year and may be reappointed.

An application (PDF) for new members of the election committee can be found, along with other volunteer applications, on the speaker's page. Please forward completed applications to [email protected] by Feb. 1, 2023.

Speaking of volunteers, it’s never too early to complete the application form to volunteer to serve on a reference committee. Applications can be found on the speaker's page.

The AMA 2023 budget information is now available to members of the House of Delegates upon request, through January 31. If you would like a copy of this year’s budget, please send your request to [email protected]. Please note that the document is available only to members of the House and should be treated as confidential.

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to a recent viewpoint article by our AMA EVP, Jim Madara MD, regarding our strategic planning process.
