Statement attributable to:

Patrice A. Harris, M.D.

Chair, AMA Board of Trustees

“The American Medical Association commends Congress and the President for extending the Veterans Choice Program so that veterans continue to have access to care through local community providers.

“The Veterans Choice Program Extension and Improvement Act extends the Choice Program beyond its August 2017 expiration, ensuring that our veterans will not have to wait weeks or months, or drive long distances, to get the care they need. The new law also improves payment for services and the way medical information is shared with non-VA providers.

“The AMA will continue to work with the VA and other stakeholders to seek long-term solutions that maintain and improve access to health care services for our nation’s veterans.”
