The AMA "Members Move Medicine" series profiles a wide variety of doctors, offering a glimpse into the passions of women and men navigating new courses in American medicine.

On the move with: Joshua Lesko, MD, who specializes in aerospace and emergency medicine and is a U.S. Navy flight surgeon.

AMA member since: 2011.

What inspired me to pursue a career in medicine: I shadowed a cardiologist during high school and fell in love with the complexity of medicine and being able to make a difference in the lives of patients.

How I move medicine: I seek to educate my peers regarding the issues threatening our profession and recruit them to the fight. So often, our providers are focused exclusively on patient care that we do not stand up for our own rights and needs.

Career highlights: It has been an honor to have served on the governing councils for the AMA Medical Student Section and the AMA Resident and Fellow Section. Beyond taking an active role within the organization, I help represent the military provider and patient population.

Advice I’d give to those interested in pursuing a career in medicine: My advice is simple: Find the field that you cannot live without and do not compromise.

Aspect of my work that means the most: My greatest source of satisfaction is being embedded in the operational aviation community and truly belonging to my squadrons. There is a sense of inclusion and trust that transcends the traditional doctor-patient relationship.
