The Academic Physicians Section (APS) convenes biannually to consider business such as policymaking and the election of governing council members. APS business meetings are held in advance of each Annual and Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.

Fostering professional identity formation in medical education

This APS CME webinar will focus on professional identity formation (PIF), the ongoing process by which medical students and physicians integrate the profession's values, behaviors and norms into their sense of self. 

We'll discuss how factors such as personal values, culture and lived experiences shape this development and why recognizing these influences is key to fostering belonging and well-being.

The session will also examine common challenges including identity dissonance, imposter syndrome and exclusion. We'll share practical strategies for educators and institutions to effectively support professional identity formation in medicine. Earn free CME for attending.

The Impact of Private Equity on Medical Training

In this APS webinar, learn about private equity and its impact on medical training. John Andrews, MD, vice president, AMA graduate medical education innovations; John Duval, MBA, ACGME senior scholar in residence; and Jane M. Zhu, MD, MPP, MSHP, associate professor of medicine at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, provided an overview of emerging trends in private equity, impacts on health care and graduate medical education, and related AMA policy.

Physician Unionization: Might Physician Unions be a Useful Solution to Help Restore Physician Autonomy?

The APS led a balanced discussion on the potential advantages and disadvantages of physician unionization in the academic medical center. 

Presenters included: Barak Richman, JD, PhD, author of the 2022 JAMA editorial, "Restoring Physician Authority in an Era of Hospital Dominance"; Jay Hochsztein, MD, second vice president at Doctors Council; and Anna Yap, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of California-Davis School of Medicine.
