LGBT patients more likely to be uninsured, lack personal doctor

Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) are more likely to report that they lack health insurance, according to a recent Gallup poll.

Although the percentage of LGBT adults without health insurance has decreased significantly since implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance requirement at the beginning of the year, these patients still are more likely to be uninsured than their non-LGBT counterparts.

The poll found that 25 percent of LGBT respondents said they struggled to afford health care in the last 12 months, compared to 17 percent of non-LGBT respondents.
