Physicians at some organizations still have to perform an extra identification step in the electronic health record when they approve a prescription—usually with password re-entry, a badge tap or biometric identification.

This can be turned off. No federal regulation requires two-factor authentication for signing off on a non-controlled substance. At a large health care organization, this single change can potentially save billions of clicks and keystrokes.
