CHICAGO – The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization, today announced the re-election of David H. Aizuss, M.D., an ophthalmologist from Los Angeles, Calif., to its Board of Trustees.
“As a physician in private practice and a leader in organized medicine, I can tell you the challenges facing our health system are huge, and they affect practice sustainability and our patients’ access to care,” Dr. Aizuss said. “That is why at the AMA we are fighting for Medicare payment reform, to fix prior authorization, and reduce physician burnout. I am humbled to be re-elected to the AMA board of trustees, and I thank my colleagues for placing their trust and faith in me at this critical time.”
Dr. Aizuss is a longtime leader in organized medicine; he served as chair of the board and later president of the California Medical Association (CMA), where he was responsible for implementing a new organizational emphasis on diversity and inclusion, creating a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. His guidance led CMA to significantly increase diversity in its council and committee leadership, as well as in their AMA delegation. Dr. Aizuss has also been at the forefront on issues such as physician scope of practice, vaccines, mental health and firearm violence.
As a Northwestern University medical student, he served as a leader in the Illinois State Medical Society’s Medical Student Section and on the AMA-Medical Students Section (AMA-MSS) Governing Council. He also served on the AMA-Resident and Fellow Section (AMA-RFS) Governing Council for three years.
Dr. Aizuss is the managing partner of an eight-physician multi-specialty ophthalmology group in Encino and West Hills, California, the largest private multi-specialty ophthalmology group in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. He practices full time, seeing patients Monday through Friday, and operating once or twice weekly. He has also served as chief of surgery, chair of quality improvement and vice chief of staff at his local hospital, as well as chair of the governing board of his ambulatory surgery center.
Dr. Aizuss received his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School and his bachelor’s degree in medicine from Northwestern University. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles, where he also undertook a fellowship in cornea and external ocular disease.
