A note from the YPS chair
March 2025
From YPS Chair Sam Mathis, MD, MBA
March is such an exciting month. This will be my daughter’s first spring break since starting school. I have taken the week off myself to spend time with my family. My hope is that the week will be a time of relaxation (as much as one can have with a 5-year-old) and connection. This got me thinking about how much time we need to unwind and relax. Whether it is sleeping in on the weekend, taking a much-needed vacation, or even reading a book for 10 minutes before bed, I want to encourage you to take some time for yourself this month.
IOP process improvement
This month, I want to recognize the committee tasked on rewriting our endorsement process in the IOPs. They were asked to bring the YPS into alignment with the election rules. Over the past three months since the end of the interim meeting, the committee has met multiple times to draft language. These revisions have been submitted to the Council on Constitution and Bylaws for review and will be presented to the Assembly at our annual business meeting. If adopted, they will go to the board for approval and be instituted for elections in 2027 and beyond. This committee has done a lot of work in a short period of time, and we are so thankful to them.
Spring: a busy season for YPS
March and April are busy months for the AMA. March 17 is the deadline to apply for an appointed council position. March 28th is the deadline to volunteer for an AMA-HOD volunteer position. Finally, April 11 and April 22 are the deadlines to submit resolutions to the YPS and the AMA-HOD, respectively. The YPS has always had a great track record of volunteering for house committees, and I encourage you to consider applying this year as well. If you are chosen, please let us know at [email protected] so we can recognize you during our business meeting.
Spring is also a great time to invest in professional development ahead of the Annual Meeting. I recently learned of a great webinar from April 2024 that reviewed the potential benefits of physician unionization. I recommend the AMA Ed Hub ™ for additional educational webinars for members. Additionally, this month has an exciting webinar from the Women Physicians Section.
A moment of gratitude
Lastly, as I do every month, I want to take a moment and just say "thank you". Thank you for showing up and participating even when you don’t feel like it. Thank you for advocating for your patients by coming to events, emailing and calling your legislators, and participating in conversations about how we can improve health care. Thank you for caring for your patients and colleagues. It is my distinct honor to serve you and the amazing work you do.
