2025 IMGS Annual Meeting highlights

The International Medical Graduates Section (IMGS) celebrated its 28th Annual Meeting with the Congress business meeting, featuring Todd Askew, senior vice president, advocacy.

The AMA helps physicians build a better future for medicine, advocating in the courts and on the Hill to remove obstacles to patient care and confront today’s greatest health crises. 

The IMGS Governing Council ratified the following officers for the 2025-2026 term:

  • Roopa Naik, MD: Chair/alternate delegate
  • Tani Malhotra, MD: Immediate past chair
  • Deepu Sudhakaran, MD, MBA: Delegate
  • Natalia Solenkova, MD, PhD, MLS: Member at-large
  • Lucia de Gregorio Muniz, MD: Member at-large
  • Afifa Adiba, MD: Member at-large
  • Parag Mehta, MD: Member at-large
  • Rosalynn Conic, MD, PhD, MPH: Resident/fellow

IMGS submitted three resolutions to the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD), which includes an urgent resolution, for consideration by the HOD. An additional four resolutions were cosponsored by IMGS.

  1. Resolution 234: Protection for International Medical Graduates (PDF)
  2. Resolution 312: Selection of IMG Residents Based on Merit (PDF)
  3. IMGS Urgent Resolution: Urgent Advocacy to Restore J-1 Visa Processing for IMG Physicians

Cosponsored resolutions:

  1. Medical Students Section (MSS) Resolution 218: Distribution of Resident Slots Commensurate with Shortages (PDF)
  2. MSS Resolution 304: Addressing Professionalism Standards in Medical Training (PDF)
  3. Residents & Fellows Section Resolution 011: Opposition of Health Care Entities from Reporting Individual Patient Immigration Status (PDF)
  4. Organized Medical Staff Section Resolution: Addressing Targeting and Workplace Restrictions and Barriers to Healthcare Delivery by International Medical Graduate (IMG) Physicians and other Physicians Based upon Migration Status or Country of Origin within Healthcare Systems

The IMGS 16th Desserts from Around the World Reception was successful in offering many tasty desserts that were enjoyed by over 300 guests along with entertainment by the Meher Dance Group.

The section participated in the Health Equity Caucus along with the LGBTQ+ Section and Women Physicians Section on Sunday, June 8.

The IMGS Annual Meeting culminated with its Busharat Ahmad, MD, Leadership Development Program, cosponsored by the Minority Affairs Section, on Monday, June 9, featuring George Abraham, MD; Patrice Harris, MD; and Scott Ferguson, MD, AMA board liaison, in the program “The Power of Representation: Elevating Minority Voices in Medicine and Health Care Policy.” This program was very well received and offered many strategies on how physicians can raise their voices to foster advocacy policy and change. This program was approved for 1.0 of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.
