Leading medicine through change

Medicine is in a period of profound transition. Scientific advances continue to accelerate, yet physicians across specialties and practice settings face growing administrative complexity, workforce pressures, and uncertainty about the future of professional practice.

  • Throughout my career—as a practicing orthopaedic surgeon, educator and participant in organized medicine—I have come to appreciate how deeply these challenges affect physicians and the patients we serve.
  • My involvement in the AMA began early in training and has continued across many stages of professional life.

Progress in medicine does not come from a single perspective. It comes from physicians listening to one another, understanding the realities of different practice environments, and choosing to move forward together.

Clinical practice continues to shape how I lead organized medicine. Decisions made in meeting rooms—often far from the bedside—ultimately shape the care experienced by patients, families and care teams. Remaining grounded in that connection continues to guide my approach to advocacy, governance and professional responsibility. This moment calls for steady leadership rooted in collaboration, respect for diverse viewpoints and a commitment to strengthening the profession for future generations of physicians.

Physician first, always

Leadership shaped by listening

My engagement with organized medicine began as a medical student and has continued through residency, academic practice and national service.

  • Early experiences during discussions surrounding resident work hours and physician training highlighted how differently policies can affect physicians depending on specialty, career stage and practice environment.
  • Through the AMA, I have worked alongside physicians practicing in rural and urban communities, private practice and academic systems, and across generations of the profession.

These conversations shape how I lead far more than any single role or title. This work has reinforced the importance of thoughtful dialogue and mutual respect. Physicians bring diverse experiences and priorities yet remain united by a shared commitment to patient care and professional integrity. Listening carefully—to colleagues, trainees, and those whose perspectives differ from our own—has been one of the most valuable lessons of my journey.

Preparing the AMA for what comes next

The AMA has long served as a unifying voice for physicians navigating change. As medicine continues to evolve, maintaining that sense of professional community is essential.

  • Supporting physicians across specialties, strengthening pathways for those entering practice, and fostering collaboration across diverse practice settings will be critical in the years ahead.
  • Sustaining the physician workforce requires attention not only to policy but also to professional culture—ensuring physicians feel supported, heard and able to focus on patient care.

Organized medicine plays an important role in preserving the values that define our profession while helping physicians adapt to new realities.

The AMA’s strength will come from its ability to bring physicians together, foster meaningful dialogue, and advance solutions grounded in shared purpose.

That work begins with physicians and endures with them.
