The AMA “Members Move Medicine” series profiles a wide variety of doctors and health care organizations, offering a glimpse into the passions of women and men navigating new courses in American medicine.

On the move with: Marshfield Clinic Health System.

New AMA member since: 2018.

How our organization moves medicine: As a fully-integrated Health System, we can provide care to people close to their homes, on their terms and across the continuum of care. By combining our provider group, research institute, health plan and acute care facilities into one system, we are able to make care more coordinated, efficient and patient-centered. This integrated approach, particularly between care delivery and the health plan, allows us to develop innovative care models that enhance patient experience and bring down costs.

How our organization stands out from competitors: Our history, experience, reputation, and now, our fully-integrated system, are differentiators for us. We have very few competitors that can match the breadth, depth and diversity of health care services that we offer conveniently within one system.

Groundbreaking or innovative projects at our organization: Our work around telehealth, population health and developing new models of care has all been innovative. Our Research Institute is one of the leading organizations in a national National Institutes of Health study of precision medicine and is also doing critical work in areas like big data, the flu vaccine, rare diseases, farm medicine, rural health care, genetics, cancer care, machine learning and the connection between oral and overall health. Our growth strategy may also be seen as somewhat groundbreaking.

Notable accomplishments and awards:

  • Our CEO, Dr. Turney, was recognized as one of the 50 most influential physician executives and leaders in the nation by Modern Healthcare.
  • For the third straight year, our hospital, Lakeview Medical Center, was named one of the nation's 100 hospitals by IBM Watson Health.
  • Our health plan received the World Class First Call Resolution achievement award through Service Quality Measurement Group. Our health plan also earned a 4.5 Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid for its Medicare Advantage Plans for 2017-2018. Few Medicare health plans in the nation receive an overall star rating of 4.5 or 5 stars.
  • Many of our providers and researchers have been recognized as individuals for their outstanding contributions to their respective fields.

How our organization gives back to the community: We are heavily involved in all our communities from a health education and population health perspective. We also invest in our communities to support healthy lifestyle initiatives and programs, and we have developed a program to incentivize our own employees to volunteer in all our communities.
