A note from the YPS chair
June 2026
From YPS Chair Alisha Reiss, MD, FACS
As physicians, we know how long a call shift can feel, yet somehow the years still fly by. It is hard to believe that this will be my final post as chair of the Young Physicians Section.
Serving as your chair this past year has been both an honor and a privilege, and I would like to share a few reflections on my time in the YPS.
After medical school, we immerse ourselves in training and in the close-knit worlds of our respective specialties. We attend CME courses and professional meetings surrounded by people whose work and experiences closely mirror our own. The AMA, and especially the sections, gives us the opportunity to step outside those familiar circles and connect with colleagues we might never otherwise meet at the specialty level.
Personally, some of my closest friendships have come through the AMA and the YPS. I have met friends while traveling, attended milestone events and collaborated for speaking engagements. My time in the YPS has brought extraordinary people into my life who have truly enriched it, both professionally and personally.
My experience in the YPS has also deepened my appreciation for the many different facets of medicine. I have had the opportunity to meet leaders from The Joint Commission, military medicine, elected officials and physicians representing nearly every specialty. These experiences have reinforced that while our challenges and priorities may differ, we are united by a shared commitment to providing the best possible care for our patients and protecting the future of our profession.
We never know where life will lead us or what opportunities lie ahead. I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of you and to advocating for policies that expand access to care, reduce unnecessary burdens and recognize the value of what physicians do every day.
I look forward to seeing you all very soon in Chicago!
