A note from the YPS chair

July 2025

From YPS Chair Alisha Reiss, MD, FACS

I am excited to be writing my first members and news highlights as your new YPS chair, and looking forward to a year of growth and collaboration. My hope for the year is to find new ways to reach members and continue to communicate with our already very engaged section.

Most of you reading this probably already know me, but if I'm reaching some new members, I will share a little about myself. I am an employed general surgeon at a critical access hospital in rural western Ohio, practicing in the county where I was born and raised. It is a great honor to provide surgical services to the people who raised me.

YPS members & news highlights

Check the list of additional monthly issues of YPS member news for details on the section's advocacy efforts, leadership opportunities, education, member profiles and more.

In addition to being a general surgeon, I also serve as the chief-of-staff and medical director for oncology services at our hospital. I am involved with our state medical association as well as a governor for the American College of Surgeons. As a rural physician, one of my passions for organized medicine is advocating for access to high-quality care.

Aside from medicine, I am a wife and mother of two rambunctious boys, ages four and two. My husband and I also run a quarter horse farm with my brother and sister-in-law. In the small amounts of free time, I enjoy swimming, golf and hiking with my family. I hope by sharing this that I can connect with more of you. Please reach out via email or GroupMe with any concerns, questions or just to connect.

YPS liaison to the Council on Medical Education

Enough about me. I want to highlight some work of our section. We have just appointed Jocelyn Young, DO, MSc(Ed), MSc, FAAFP of New York to serve as the YPS liaison to the Council on Medical Education’s CME Committee. Dr. Young currently serves as the designated institutional official and director of medical education, family medicine residency faculty at United Health Services in Binghamton, New York. She has been actively engaged with the YPS and served on our handbook review committees. Her interests include end-of-life medicine, medical education, women's health, hepatitis C management and advocacy. We look forward to hearing about the work of this committee at our YPS business meeting in November in National Harbor, Maryland.

AMA Section Leadership Retreat

Your governing council will be headed to Chicago in August for the Section Leadership Retreat. The meeting consists of two parts. The first will be an all-sections programming and collaboration session. This provides your GC with time and opportunities to work with other sections on shared goals.

The second part of the meeting will focus on strategic planning for our section. We will work to outline goals for the next year, as well as plans to achieve those goals. This meeting typically also offers the GC time to meet with our Board of Trustees liaisons and discuss priorities for the upcoming year.
