A note from the IMGS chair

May 2025

From IMGS Chair Tani Malhotra, MD

This time leading up to annual is my favorite. Not only is the weather starting to finally warm up for us in the Midwest, the collaboration that revs up between sections and caucuses reminds me why we take time out of our work and personal lives to attend the AMA meetings.

IOPs approved

After two years of work, our section has finally approved the AMA Board of Trustees approval for changes made to our Internal Operating Procedures (IOPs). We have made changes that increase opportunities for engagement within our section and make our elections more equitable.

IMGS Members & News Highlights

Check the list of additional monthly issues of IMGS member news for details on the section's advocacy efforts, leadership opportunities, education, member profiles and more.

In our recent elections, you re-elected Parag Mehta, MD, and elected Lucia De Gregorio Muniz, MD, to the IMGS Governing Council. Our Nominating Committee is one of the ways in which we have overhauled our previous IOPs, and I look forward to sharing the highlights of the changes with you.

A-25 volunteers

As with Interim 2024, we will be seeking volunteers to help review the handbook so we can better reflect the opinions of our members. While this was done through an ad-hoc process until now, this change was memorialized in our IOPs as well. If you have not already registered for the meeting, you have the opportunity to volunteer for the Handbook Review Committee during registration. If you already registered but missed the opportunity to volunteer, please email [email protected] indicating on which reference committee you would like to serve.

Webinar series: Training in the U.S. on a visa

Membership Moves Medicine™

  • Thousands of free CME opportunities to fulfill state requirements
  • A powerful voice fighting for you during uncertain times
  • Research, resources, events and more from the largest physician organization

This past month the IMGS, in collaboration with Intealth, hosted the first of a two-part series on being a physician in the U.S. while on a visa. This webinar covered questions around coming to the U.S. to train on visas and a recording of this can be requested by emailing us at [email protected]

Those of us who are not citizens may be concerned about the news about student visas that have been revoked over the past several weeks. I am pleased to share that at least at the time of the recording of the webinar, there were no reports of physician visas being impacted.

As always, if you have any additional concerns or issues you would like me to address at the AMA or cover in a future newsletter, or if you would like to become more involved with the section, please reach out at [email protected].
