2025 LGBTQ+ Section Interim Meeting highlights

The LGBTQ+ Section Interim Meeting was held Friday, Nov. 14 in National Harbor, Maryland. Thank you to our governing council members for all their hard work to lead the section membership throughout the LGBTQ+ Section Assembly and House of Delegates (HOD) meetings! Thank you for your dedication to the section.

Your powerful ally

The AMA helps physicians build a better future for medicine, advocating in the courts and on the Hill to remove obstacles to patient care and confront today’s greatest health crises. 

Section resolutions

Through processes set in place with the policy committee, the section sponsored two resolutions for the 2025 Interim Meeting:

  • Resolution 924: Preserving Access to Gamete Donation and Gestational Carriers and Protecting Parental Rights
  • Resolution 231: Ensuring Equitable and Timely Medical Licensure for Physicians Providing Abortion and Gender-Affirming Care

Education session

Thank you to our phenomenal speakers and chairs of the Women Physicians Section (WPS), Underrepresented in Medicine Advocacy Section (UMAS) and LGBTQ+ Section for moderating such an important and impactful education session, “Responding to DEI Policy Reversals—Impacts on Health Equity, Education, Research, Workforce, and Patient Care.”

Speakers:

  • Norma Poll-Hunter, PhD, equity, diversity and inclusion leader, Association of American Medical Colleges
  • Kavita Shah Arora, MD, current member of AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs
  • Joseph Wright, MD, chief health equity officer, American Academy of Pediatrics 

Recent legislative and judicial actions have led to the reversal of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies across health care and academic institutions. This session explored the impacts of these changes, including restrictions on medical education, physician workforce diversity, clinical practices and funding for health equity research. Expert panelists examine the consequences of curriculum changes, defunded research initiatives, and bans impacting reproductive and gender-affirming care. The session discussed strategies for physicians and organizations to maintain health equity and respond to evolving legal and policy challenges.

Learning objectives:

  1. Describe how DEI policy reversals affect the diversity of the health care workforce, medical education and future physician career pathways
  2. Discuss the clinical, ethical and financial consequences of reversing DEI-related policies, including increased health care costs and changes in care delivery for vulnerable populations
  3. Examine the impact of defunded health equity research and bans on reproductive and gender-affirming care on patient outcomes and health system practices
