Damage to the brain, mind or spirit can lead to stress injury—a persistent distress or loss of ability that comes from overwhelming stressors such as fatigue, trauma or loss. Stress injuries can lead to a range of problems, including irritability, rigidity, and even depression and thoughts of suicide. Health care professionals can learn more about the stress first aid framework, which attempts to reduce these injuries through peer support and self-care.
