Justin W. Magrath, who holds a PhD in biomedical sciences from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Alabama, is proud to represent the American Medical Association Medical Student Section (MSS) on the AMA Board of Trustees. Raised in Mandeville, La., Magrath currently is in his final year of medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine.
For his PhD, Magrath’s work focused on studying desmoplastic small round cell tumor, a rare pediatric cancer. The combination of this research and his clinical experiences have led him to pursue a career as a physician-scientist in pediatric oncology.
Magrath’s AMA involvement began during his first year of medical school. Inspired by the goal of improving the health of patients and ensuring everyone has access to the care they need, he has researched and written resolutions on a wide range of topics including Medicaid cost-sharing, the public option, childhood tax credit and climate change. Within the AMA-MSS he has served in various leadership positions including as chair of Region 3, as the section alternate delegate on the AMA-MSS Governing Council, and as a member of the AMA Council on Medical Service where he recently completed a two-year span working on issues such as medical debt, network adequacy, Medicaid estate recovery and the employer-sponsored insurance firewall.
Magrath has also been involved in the Louisiana State Medical Society where he has served as chair of the medical student section and represented the society as an alternate delegate to the AMA-HOD. Outside of organized medicine, Magrath has been involved in the Tulane student-run clinics as both a volunteer and a research coordinator and spent two years as a certified application counselor helping people within the New Orleans area enroll in health insurance.
