The broad spectrum of physician backgrounds and experiences united together in a common purpose of improving health care for the nation’s physicians and patients is what gives organized medicine its strength, and the AMA Board of Trustees is no exception. The 2014-2015 board is the association’s most diverse.
AMA President Robert M. Wah, MD (pictured top-right), became the association’s first Asian-American president earlier this month during the 2014 AMA Annual Meeting. Kentucky emergency physician Steven J. Stack, MD (pictured top-left), was named president-elect at the same meeting; he will be the youngest president in AMA history.
During the meeting, AMA delegates elected Nashville anesthesiologist Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD (pictured bottom-right), as the young physician member of the board. Dr. Ehrenfeld is the first openly gay member on the board of directors.
Seven women also will serve this year on the AMA Board of Trustees, including Board Chair Barbara L. McAneny, MD (pictured bottom-left), a medical oncologist/hematologist from Albuquerque.
Members of the AMA Board of Trustees live all across the country, practice in a wide variety of settings and specialties, and represent every stage of the profession—from medical student to late-career physician.
The varied opinions and experiences from members of the AMA Board of Trustees will help guide the AMA in its work on behalf of America’s physicians and patients, including its three core initiatives: Improving Health Outcomes, Accelerating Change in Medical Education, and enhancing Professional Satisfaction and Practice Sustainability.
