CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced the release of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2027 code set, including 299 new codes that reflect advances in medical, surgical and diagnostic services.
The CPT code set continues to evolve alongside the rapid pace of medical innovation, providing a structured pathway for integrating new services and procedures into the healthcare system. Many of the latest updates reflect advancements in contemporary clinical practice, science and technology, helping ensure the CPT code set fulfills its vital role as a uniform language of medicine.

These updates ensure CPT continues to serve patients, physicians and the broader healthcare system.”
The CPT code set’s role goes far beyond medical billing. It serves as the backbone of health data interoperability (PDF) in the United States, helping ensure that all parts of the healthcare system can accurately identify and communicate the services patients receive. CPT data also supports value-based care, access to preventive services, quality measurement, research and analytics—making it essential to how modern healthcare is delivered, measured and improved.
The CPT code set is maintained through an independent, open and evidence-informed process with broad input from healthcare professionals, government agencies, health plans and industry. For the CPT 2027 code set, this process resulted in 453 total editorial changes, including 299 new codes, 74 revisions and 80 deletions.
Key updates included in the CPT 2027 code set, which go into effect on January 1, include significant updates to maternity care, ventricular assist device procedures, hernia repair, prostate biopsy, biofeedback, radiology and sleep medicine:
- Maternity care services: As previously announced and released early to support implementation, a revised code framework replaces the decades-old global maternity care bundle and better reflects contemporary, team-based obstetric practice across antepartum, labor, delivery and postpartum care.
- Ventricular assist device procedures: New and revised guidelines, including three new codes involving left ventricular assist devices, improve reporting for these important procedures.
- Hernia repair: Nine new codes expand reporting options for traumatic and non-traumatic open, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic diaphragmatic hernia repair procedures.
- Prostate biopsy: Updated codes and guidelines better reflect current biopsy techniques and improve data specificity.
- Biofeedback: A new time-based code structure aligns reporting with how biofeedback training is commonly delivered.
- Radiology: New and revised codes, along with a new table for head and neck magnetic resonance angiography, better reflect current imaging technologies.
- Sleep medicine: Six new codes for unattended sleep studies reflect advances in sleep-testing technology, including services delivered outside traditional sleep centers.
The CPT 2027 code set continues to expand to better describe AI-related services that support or assist healthcare professionals. It adds 10 new codes, bringing the total number of AI-related CPT codes to 43. The CPT Editorial Panel also updated Taxonomy for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Services and Procedures, which helps applicants and other CPT stakeholders choose the right terminology for CPT code descriptors. These changes are meant to keep the framework relevant as clinical AI evolves.

From Nov. 18 through Nov. 20, CPT experts will deliver authoritative coding guidance and clinical context for the upcoming changes to the CPT 2027 code set and payment policies at the CPT & RBRVS 2027 Annual Symposium.
