“With millions of children facing a loss of health coverage, the AMA commends the Biden Administration for staving off that terrible outcome by extending mandatory, continuous coverage to young people. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently told state health officials that states must provide 12 months of continuous coverage for children under the age of 19 on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beginning January 1, 2024. To thrive, children need continuous care. This decision will make sure that low-income families are not faced with interruptions to their children’s coverage.

“Medicaid unwinding is a threat to children’s health and equity. We are grateful that the administration has a clear-eyed view of this threat and has taken a significant step to ensure children do not fall victim to bureaucratic obstacles to care.”
