The delivery of maternity care has evolved to reflect advances in modern, team-based obstetric practice, and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are adapting in response to this dynamic landscape.

The CPT Editorial Panel has approved a restructuring of codes for maternity care services that moves beyond the legacy global model to a more granular framework. Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, physicians and other qualified health care professionals will be able to report services delivered across an individualized pregnancy spectrum for improved alignment between clinical work, documentation and reporting, and increased tracking and transparency across the health care ecosystem. The changes will have benefits and considerations not only for professional services reporting, but also for facility/hospital reporting.

Attendees will learn:

  • Practical guidance on coding for the four phases: antepartum care, labor management, delivery and postpartum care
  • Where to apply evaluation and management (E/M) coding requirements
  • Clinical scenario walk-throughs
  • Practice management strategies and facility/hospital reporting considerations

Speakers

  • Zach Hochstetler, MBA, MPP, vice president, Coding & Payment, AMA
  • Leslie Prellwitz, MBA, CCS, CCS-P, CPMA, director, CPT Content Management & Development, AMA
  • Tammy Love, RHIA, CCS, CDIP, director, Coding, Classification and Policy, American Hospital Association
