Maryam Asif, MD

Maryam Asif, MD, an international medical graduate, embarked on a remarkable journey that has led her to the current role as an assistant professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Her story is one of unwavering determination, resilience and unbridled ambition.

Dr. Asif’s voyage began at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, where she earned her medical degree. Following graduation, she completed a year of internship and took on the role of an instructor in pathology at a medical college in Lahore, Pakistan. However, life took a turn when her husband secured a job opportunity in the U.S., prompting them to relocate. This move marked a fresh start for her, one filled with challenges and opportunities.

To pursue her dream of practicing medicine in the U.S., Dr. Asif embarked on an arduous path. She dedicated herself to studying rigorously for the USMLE exams, eventually attaining ECFMG certification. Along the way, she worked as a researcher in renal pathology at the University of Washington, gaining valuable experience and insight.

Her journey continued when she matched with the University of Chicago in the field of pathology. She subsequently completed a transfusion medicine/blood banking fellowship at Bloodworks Northwest in Seattle. These experiences equipped her with the expertise and knowledge needed to excel in her chosen field.

Dr. Asif is passionate about mentoring international medical students and visiting physicians who seek guidance and support in their quest to become practicing physicians in the U.S. Dr. Asif believes in paying forward the knowledge and wisdom she has gained, and is committed to making a meaningful impact on the journeys of fellow IMGs.
