Illinois and D.C. ban conversion therapy for minors

Illinois became the fourth state, alongside Washington, D.C., to ban the practice of ex-gay conversion therapy for minors.

In an Aug. 20 article, The Washington Blade explained that other states, such as California, New Jersey and Oregon have similar bans. Brian Hurley, MD, chair of the AMA Advisory Committee on LGBT issues, recently was appointed to represent the AMA and serve on a writing group to create a joint statement authored by major U.S. health care associations on how conversion therapy is harmful and unethical.
