Know Your Patients

Get to know the LGBTQ population using a series of free learning modules from the Fenway Institute. Each module has corresponding literature, role-playing scenarios and handouts.

The series includes the following modules:

  • Achieving Health Equity for LGBTQ People
  • Improving Health Care for Transgender People
  • Caring for LGBTQ Youth in Clinical Settings
  • Caring for LGBTQ Older Adults
  • Getting to Zero: Reducing HIV Incidence Through Screening, Treatment and Prevention

Understand Frequently Asked Questions From LGBTQ Patients

Review the lists of top 10 issues for LGBTQ patients to bring up when visiting their health care providers based on their orientation, provided for patients by the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

Read over the suggested topics of discussion—be familiar with what LGBTQ patients may ask of you, or what your patients may be hesitant to address voluntarily.

Review Best Practices for Taking a Sexual History

Many health care providers know and understand the importance of taking a proper sexual history. Often times, it is the sexual history that reveals additional important facets about patients, such as their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The AMA has recently developed a free video to educate physicians on best practices when taking a sexual history.

Watch "Patient Sexual Health History: What You Need to Know to Help" to find recommendations and considerations when treating LGBTQ patients.
