Physicians are increasingly called upon to lead teams, adopt new technologies, improve care delivery, strengthen practices and help shape the future of health care. Clinical excellence remains the foundation of medicine. But it is not the only skill physicians need to maximize their impact.
As medicine becomes more complex, it’s important that we think about our careers the same way we think about our clinical practice: as something that requires continuous growth, thoughtful investment and a willingness to keep learning.
That idea is what inspired the AMA to create the Career Advancement Collective, an initiative to help physicians grow as clinicians and leaders in shaping medicine’s future.
Why does that matter?
Because some of the most important decisions affecting patient care are no longer made solely in the exam room. They are made in boardrooms, practice meetings, quality committees, technology reviews and leadership teams. Physicians are helping determine how artificial intelligence is integrated into care, how practices are organized, how care teams function and how innovation reaches patients safely and effectively.
Leadership, teamwork and systems thinking are essential parts of patient care. That is why the Career Advancement Collective focuses on practical skills physicians increasingly need throughout their careers: leadership, business strategy, practice management, communication and professional development. Just as importantly, it connects physicians with peers who understand these challenges because they are living them every day.
Physicians don’t have to go it alone
Medicine has always been built on learning from one another. Yet many physicians find themselves navigating major career decisions in isolation. Whether building an independent practice, stepping into a leadership role or managing organizational change, there is tremendous value in learning from colleagues who have already traveled that path.
The AMA Career Advancement Collective creates those opportunities. Through workshops, including the two-day AMA Physician Entrepreneur Forum that kicks off Friday in Chicago, on-demand learning and the AMA Physician Leadership Academy, physicians can choose the learning experiences that best fit their goals. Every offering shares the same philosophy: practical education led by experienced physicians and health system leaders, focused on real-world challenges rather than abstract theory.
The goal is not simply to prepare physicians for the next promotion or title. It is to help them build careers with greater purpose, influence and impact.
The AMA has long supported physicians in advancing medical science, improving patient care and advocating for the profession.
