A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association examined how critical illness might contribute to psychiatric illness and the need for psychiatric medications after being admitted to the intensive care unit. The study found critically ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation had a higher prevalence of prior psychiatric diagnoses and an increased risk of a new psychiatric diagnosis and medication use after hospital discharge.
