WASHINGTON —The American Medical Association (AMA) presented Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service.
A Republican in deep blue Maryland, Gov. Hogan has a reputation for bipartisanship and has governed by a pledge to advance the best ideas, regardless of which side of the aisle conceived of them. Gov. Hogan enacted a major expansion of the Maryland Model, the state’s unique all-payer contract with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), setting an example for the rest of the country. And he has continued to make investments in the state’s health information exchange (HIE) so that all physicians could share data effectively and participate in new transformation efforts. His contributions allowed for the state HIE to accelerate real-time data delivery and engage hospitals and clinics in new care redesign efforts.

Hogan has kept his promise to focus on bipartisan, commonsense solutions in the area of health care – a promise kept benefitting millions of Marylanders,” said AMA Board Chair Jesse Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH. “A leader in confronting the opioid epidemic and protecting access to affordable health care coverage in his state, Gov. Hogan has successfully reduced insurance rates in his state and earned the respect and admiration of all Marylanders. It is our pleasure to present him with the Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Governor.”
Gov. Hogan has demonstrated bold and effective leadership in response to the opioid crisis. He created the Maryland Heroin and Opioid Task Force and immediately implemented all 33 of their comprehensive recommendations. He was the first governor in America to declare a state of emergency in response to the opioid crisis and has committed $800 million toward fighting the state’s substance abuse epidemic through education, prevention, treatment and enforcement.
Gov. Hogan is one of eight honorees chosen this year to receive the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. The award, named after the founding father of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. Gov. Hogan was nominated for the Nathan Davis Award by MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society.
The AMA presented Gov. Hogan with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award last night at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. as part of the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference.
