CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced the Ethical AI Use in Medicine Series, a new continuing medical education (CME) program that helps physicians safely, effectively and ethically utilize augmented/artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical practice.
“As AI rapidly transforms medical practice, the AMA is committed to equipping physicians with clear, practical ethics guidance rooted in our Code of Medical Ethics,” said AMA President Willie Underwood III, MD, MSc, MPH. “By translating these ethical principles into actionable steps, we aim to support physicians in using AI tools responsibly—always with patient trust and safety at the forefront. These resources empower physicians to navigate new technology with confidence, reinforcing the AMA’s role as a trusted source for clinical excellence and ethical standards.”
Jointly developed by the AMA, the Duke Institute for Health Innovation, and the Health AI Partnership, the case-based series addresses the growing need for practical ethics guidance as AI becomes more widely adopted across health care. The curriculum translates ethical principles into practical tools and real-world scenarios that support physicians' clinical decision-making while helping preserve patient trust and confidence in the medical profession.
Available exclusively through AMA Ed Hub™, the AMA's online platform for high-quality CME and professional development resources, the series includes four modules:
- Ethical AI Use in Medicine: A Clinical Practice Toolkit — Gives physicians a practical, ethics-based framework to evaluate, implement and monitor AI tools with confidence, from initial assessment through ongoing oversight.
- Ethical AI Use in Clinical Decision-Making — Engages learners in realistic clinical scenarios that strengthen judgement, accountability, and patient-centered decision-making when AI informs care.
- A Structured Decision Simulator for Using AI Mortality Prediction for Clinical Decision Support: AI Ethics in Clinical Practice — Immerses physicians in a guided decision simulator focused on the responsible use of an AI-powered mortality prediction model, including risk communication, bias awareness, and appropriate clinical reliance
- A Structured Decision Simulator for Using an Ambient AI Scribe: AI Ethics in Clinical Practice — Helps clinicians apply ethical safeguards to ambient documentation, with emphasis on transparency, patient trust, physician verification and safe use of AI-generated notes.
The Ethical AI Use in Medicine Series provides physicians and health systems with clinically relevant education that supports responsible use of AI in ways that reinforce the central role of physician judgement, uphold patient trust, and advance high-quality patient care.
