AMA honors Mainer with Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The American Medical Association (AMA) honored Gordon H. Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association (MMA) with the Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors medical association executives who have contributed substantially to the goals and ideals of the medical profession.

“A Maine lifer with nearly 40 years of service at the Maine Medical Association, including more than 24 years as the organization’s executive vice president, Gordon Smith is a committed, thoughtful, strategic leader for a time of rapid change in medicine,” said AMA President Barbara L. McAneny, M.D. “Because of Gordon’s ability to build consensus and lead by doing, and so much more, he was sought out as a leader by government officials, commissions and groups on recent opioid legislation. His prize for enacting change? He has traveled virtually nonstop across Maine, teaching the new legal standards for opioid prescribing in numerous forums.”
