Pearl of the Week: Pull, don’t push, ADT notifications

Reduce EHR messages about admission, discharge and transfer events

STEPS Forward Pearl of the Week

One hospital admission can generate six or more unique EHR inbox messages for a primary care physician. This is one way unnecessary messages about admission, discharge and transfer (ADT) events can flood a physician’s inbox.

The solution: Remove automatic ADT routing to inboxes; instead, gather notifications into a dashboard. Physicians can “pull” information by logging into the dashboard instead of having messages “pushed” to their already-crowded inboxes.
