Section Leadership Retreat

Greetings AMAzing WPS! I hope this members and news highlights finds you fully enjoying the latter part of summer. Our governing council (GC) had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the AMA Section Leadership Retreat (SLR) earlier this month, where we networked and socialized with governing council members from all the other AMA sections, as well as with AMA staff leaders and the Board of Trustees.

WPS Members & News Highlights

Check the list of additional monthly issues of WPS member news for details on the section's advocacy efforts, leadership opportunities, education, member profiles and more.

I had the privilege to also serve as an invited speaker and panelist on the topic of “good governance” with fellow panelists Subhash Chandra, MD, former member of the IMGS Governing Council and current member of the APS Governing Council, and Carolyn Francavilla Brown, MD, current PPPS chair. I personally learned a great deal from my co-panelists and enjoyed answering thought-provoking questions from the other AMA section leaders in attendance.

The SLR provided time and space for each section governing council to develop and define their respective strategic goals for the upcoming year, to connect with each other and to participate in deep thinking about our role as section leaders in the foundational objectives of AMA sections: policy impact and leadership development.

Additionally, it was a collegial occasion for our GC to all meet in person for the first time. We accomplished a great deal of work and enjoyed spending some recreational time together, too.

Strategic goals

I’m happy to share our WPS strategic goals for 2025-2025, generated collectively by our GC:

  1. Increase WPS collaborations with AMA sections, state societies and AMA delegations
  2. Increase WPS impact and education on women’s health and leadership
  3. Increase engagement of WPS members

Our WPS GC plans to utilize our section’s policymaking process, educational programming, mentoring opportunities and various other section efforts to achieve our strategic goals. Our section members have created a virtual “community” via our WPS GroupMe, and our GC and staff have implemented an online Google form (more details about the form in this month’s WPS newsletter) for real-time continuous feedback about our section to our staff and GC. Feedback can be anonymous for optimal candor. Contact our WPS (email [email protected]) to join our GroupMe and to inquire about ways to engage.
