Elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees in June 2025, Marta Van Beek, MD, MPH, is a double board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon who practices within the University of Iowa Care System. Dr. Van Beek holds the C. William Hanke Professorship of Dermatologic Surgery & Cutaneous Oncology and is director of the ACGME fellowship in micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology. She performs Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction at the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Van Beek currently serves as the executive medical director of ambulatory care for the University of Iowa where she supports alignment, access and patient-centered care across 22 departments and four campuses. She previously completed two terms as chief of staff of the Iowa hospital system where she helped implement pandemic transitions of care delivery and championed physician wellness with early implementation of teamed based care.

Dr. Van Beek’s long interest in health policy has placed her in multiple national leadership roles. Previously, she served seven years on the AMA Council on Legislation and was elected chair in 2024. As chair of the Dermatology Section Council, she convened 12 national dermatology societies around consensus policy in the AMA House of Delegates. Dr. Van Beek served six years in executive leadership for the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). During her term as AAD secretary-treasurer, she supervised alignment of investments with the strategic plan that culminated in doubling annual revenue. She was instrumental in designing, launching and implementing DataDermTM, the AAD’s national registry that is currently the world’s largest dermatology registry. With more than 18 million unique patients and over 65 million patient visits, the registry is designed to promote quality improvement, identify gaps in care, and articulate “real-world” delivery of care for the development of value-based care models. She was integral to a partnership testing the guardrails of training and developing an AI tool to detect rare inflammatory disease earlier to relieve patient suffering.

Dr. Van Beek has served on several national boards including: the American Academy of Dermatology, Association of Professors of Dermatology, and the American College of Mohs Surgeons. As a keynote plenary speaker, visiting professor, and grand rounds faculty domestically and abroad, Dr. Van Beek presents on health advocacy, physician payment delivery models, physician leadership competencies, vulnerability in executive leadership, patient centered chronic care, and guardrails for augmented/artificial intelligence in healthcare tools.
