Elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees in June 2022, Marilyn J. Heine, MD, is an emergency medicine and hematology oncology physician in southeast Pennsylvania and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
A tenacious advocate for physicians and patients and passionate leader within the AMA, Dr. Heine has served as chair of the AMA Council on Legislation, as a board member of the AMA Political Action Committee (AMPAC), and as a member of the AMA Private Practice Physicians Congress Governing Council before it became a section. In addition, she has served as a member of the Mobility Caucus Executive Committee, as a delegate in the AMA House of Delegates, and as chair of the AMA Board’s Awards and Nominations Committee where she played an instrumental role in strengthening AMPAC and enhancing the awards program.
Dr. Heine represents the AMA on the board of the CAQH Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange and the Da Vinci Project Clinical Advisory Council where she works to enhance interoperability and streamline the business of medical practice.
Dr. Heine has held prominent leadership positions in state and specialty societies including: president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED), chair of PAMED’s Telehealth Task Force and chair of the PAMED Political Action Committee; president of the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians (PACEP); president of the Bucks County Medical Society where she continues on the Executive Committee; chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Federal Government Affairs Committee and ACEP’s lead representative to the Core Quality Measures Collaborative; legislative director and board member of the Pennsylvania Society of Hematology and Oncology; and member of the Association for Clinical Oncology Government Relations Committee. A past chair of the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine, she also served on the Federation of State Medical Boards Nominating Committee.
A national speaker on health policy, physician advocacy, scope of practice, AI and medical emergencies, Dr. Heine has testified before Congress on “Medicare Physician Payment: How to Build a Payment System that Provides Quality, Efficient Care for Medicare Beneficiaries.” She serves as chair of a congressional physicians advisory board and is widely recognized as a trusted resource by policymakers on “both sides of the aisle.” In addition to her roles as a media spokesperson and as an associate member of the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia, Dr. Heine received gubernatorial appointments to the Pennsylvania eHealth Collaborative and the Health Care Reform Implementation Committee.
Dr. Heine is a longstanding champion of our future leaders and has served as a mentor for the AMA Foundation Leadership Development Institute and as a presenter in the “What I Wish I Knew in Medical School” series.
For her many accomplishments in health policy and advocacy, she has received a wide range of accolades including the PACEP Award for Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine, the inaugural AMPAC Award for Political Participation, the AMA Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award, and the ACEP Award for Excellence in Health Policy.
