Workers getting more of the health care burden

33% Increased employee co-payments or coinsurance

25% Raised deductibles
18% Eliminated or placed limits on benefits
18% Offered new products, such as medical savings accounts
15% Offset premium increases with lower wage increases

Employers looking to cut health insurance expenses are shifting costs to employees.

Among the things they are trying are increasing co-payments and coinsurance and requiring workers to pay a greater portion of their premiums, according to a study by the Commonwealth Fund. The Fund, a private foundation supporting research on health and social issues, surveyed 453 employers nationwide in 2002-03.
