About the Council
Founded in 1904 to improve medical education in the US, the Council on Medical Education formulates policy on medical education by recommending educational policies to the AMA House of Delegates, through the AMA Board of Trustees. The Council is also responsible for recommending the appointments of representatives to medical education organizations, accrediting bodies, and certification boards.

Our work
The Council focuses on policy development and implementation activities through liaison and collaboration with other key organizations in medical education, support for the accreditation of undergraduate and graduate medical education programs, and collection and dissemination of critical medical education data and products/services. These activities are supported by the Council’s strategic focus on four major areas:
- Medical education financing, including student debt
- Measurement of physician competence and performance
- Transformation of medical education
- Physician workforce
