A note from the MSS chair
June 2024
As I reflect on my tenure as chair of the Medical Student Section, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible opportunity to lead and serve our dynamic and vibrant community. Working alongside inspiring leaders and dedicated members, we've advanced medicine, advocated for our profession and patients, and led numerous educational initiatives. Together, we've planted seeds for future growth, including impactful policy changes, educational guides and task forces to enhance our functioning and highlight our work.
I'm particularly excited to see these efforts flourish under new leadership. Initiatives such as the state society leadership summit, consortium, and United Leaders in Advocacy group have expanded our reach and impact, setting the stage for further progress. As my term concludes, I'm immensely proud of all we've achieved together and remain hopeful for the continued advancement of our section. Thank you for entrusting me with this role and allowing me to be part of this transformative journey.
SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC)
Our DEI Officer, Charlie Adams, Student Representative to the Minority Affairs Section, Jasmin Eatman, and Student Trustee, Aliya Siddiqui, attended the Student National Medical Association National Meeting AMEC in late March. They hosted a resolution writing workshop to help students learn about the policy process and how to get involved. Aliya also gave the State of the AMA address.
LMSA Student Advocacy, Leadership, Unity, and Diversity Summit (SALUD2024)
Our MSS Speaker, Rommel Cruz Morales, attended the Latino Medical Student Association’s 2024 SALUD Summit, “Con Valor Por Un Futuro Mejor,” on April 26-29 in Washington, D.C. The second annual summit was a celebration of advocacy, encompassing keynote speakers on grassroots movements, patient advocacy and innovation aimed at improving health care for underserved Latinx communities. Rommel also helped with the community service project in organizing care kits for a women’s shelter. Congratulations to LMSA President-elect Elizabeth Picazo, and a heartfelt thanks to LMSA for your warm welcome and amity!
National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF)
Rommel Cruz Morales also attended the 2024 NMQF Leadership Summit on April 29-30 in Washington, D.C., in association with the Minority Affairs Section. The AMA’s own Bobby Mukkamala, MD, contributed to the opening welcome remarks, and the agenda featured multiple data-driven sessions on recent legislation, disparities in Black maternal, cardiovascular and metabolic health, as well as community empowerment through grassroots movements.
