Become Part of the Resident & Fellow Section Governing Council

The governing council directs the programs and activities of the AMA Resident & Fellow Section (RFS), oversees standing committees, sets the annual and interim assembly meeting agendas and monitors resolutions and reports both in the RFS and the AMA House of Delegates. Candidates for the governing council must be active AMA members. 

The Resident & Fellow Section Governing Council members include: Chair, Vice Chair, Chair Elect, Speaker, Vice Speaker, Delegate, Alternate Delegate and Member-at-large.

If interested, register to become a state or regional chair or vice chair.

Council Member Duties


  • Preside at all meetings of the governing council.
  • Preside at assembly meetings if the speaker and vice speaker positions are vacant, until such time that a successor may be elected.
  • Be the primary spokesperson for the RFS both inside the AMA and to outside organizations.
  • Have primary responsibility over setting the annual agenda.

Vice Chair

  • Preside at meetings of the governing council in the absence of the chair or at the discretion of the chair.
  • Assist the chair in the performance of his or her duties.
  • Have primary responsibility coordinating internal operations of the RFS.

Chair Elect

  • Assist other officers in the discharge of their duties.
  • Study the position of chair in preparation of assuming the role.
  • With the assistance of the chair, compose an agenda for his or her year of service prior to assuming the position of chair.


  • With input from the governing council and AMA staff, create agenda for annual and interim meetings of RFS Assembly.
  • Provide for oversight and enforcement of the campaign rules.
  • Refer resolutions and reports submitted for consideration at RFS Assembly business meetings to reference committees.

Vice Speaker

  • Preside at meetings of the RFS Assembly during the absence of or at the request of the speaker.
  • Assist the speaker in the performance of his or her duties.
  • In conjunction with the speaker, be the primary voice for the interests of the RFS Assembly on the RFS Governing Council.


  • Represent in the AMA House of Delegates (HOD) members of the association who are residents and fellows.
  • Be responsible for reviewing all resolutions going forward from the RFS to the HOD.

Alternate Delegate

  • Represent in the AMA HOD members of the association who are residents and fellows.
  • Be responsible for reviewing all resolutions going forward from the RFS to the HOD.


  • Coordinate membership retention activities of the governing council.
  • Coordinate medical student outreach programs to encourage continued involvement in the AMA. 
  • Foster development of Resident & Fellow Sections in states where none exist.
  • Serve as the governing council liaison to the membership standing committee.

Regional Council

The Regional Council fosters and promotes strategic relationships between the RFS Governing Council, regions, leaders of state and specialty society resident sections and local residency/fellowship programs.

Sectional Delegate

The Sectional Delegate assists the RFS delegate and alternate in representing the resident and fellow members in the HOD.

Representative to RFS Councils and Committees

At least 1 resident or fellow member of AMA is selected by the RFS Assembly to serve as a member of the board of trustees.

Standing Committees

RFS currently has 7 standing committees including: Committee on Long-Range Planning, Committee on Medical Education, Legislative Advocacy Committee, Membership Committee, Committee on Scientific Research, Public Health Committee and the Committee on Business and Economics.
