CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization, announced the election of board-certified cardiologist Mario Motta, M.D., to its Board of Trustees.

“I am honored by this election, and I look forward to using my voice for the nation’s physicians,” said Dr. Motta. “Today’s physicians face a myriad of issues, from burnout to the exorbitant cost a medical education. Our patients are challenged by the ever escalating prices of medications. I have a proven record of activism, and I will be a strong, knowledgeable advocate both for patients and physicians.”

Dr. Motta has been in practice at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass., since 1983, and his practice is at North Shore Physicians Group, Cardiovascular Division. He served as president of the Massachusetts Medical Society from 2009-2010 where he addressed a number of issues, including health care delivery system, health insurance, scope of practice, young physician engagement and burnout.

He is an active member of the AMA; he has been a delegate since 2003 and served eight years on the AMA Council on Science and Public Health. Dr. Motta authored reports on environmental light pollution that have changed the lighting industry.

Outside of organized medicine, Dr. Motta is an astronomer, and widely recognized in the community for building the largest homemade telescope and observatory. In 2013, the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid in his honor.

Dr. Motta received his medical degree from Tufts Medical School and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
