L. Carlos Zapata, an emergency medicine physician from East Meadow, New York, serves as the speaker of the AMA Young Physicians Section Governing Council for the 2019-2021 term.
The YPS is a member interest group within the AMA for physicians under 40 years of age or within the first eight years of professional practice after residency and fellowship training. The Section Governing Council is responsible for enhancing young physician practice of medicine, including the transition into practice and facilitating the participation of young physicians in policy development.
Dr. Zapata is the assistant emergency medicine residency program director and a transitional year residency director with NuHealth. He has been a leader in organized medicine since his student days. Highlights of his numerous leadership positions at MSSNY include serving as a member of the MSSNY House of Delegates since 2009, MSSNY YPS Councilor since 2015, president of the Medical Society of the County of Queens from 2017-2018, and a member of the NY Delegation to the AMA. He has represented MSSNY at the AMA YPS since 2014 and served as chair of AMA RFS Region VII from 2010-11. In addition, Dr. Zapata has co-authored resolutions that asked to eliminate non-medical exemptions for childhood vaccinations, increase transparency in MSSNY leadership elections, and support IMGs and foreign students whose visa status suddenly changed.
