SPS sponsored two educational programs on Sunday, June 6:

"The COVID-19 “long-hauler” syndrome—facts, fallacies and the unknown"

This session featured:

  • Aluko A. Hope, MD, Oregon Health and Sciences University, who discussed persistent and often debilitating symptoms that persist in long-hauler patients.
  • Shannon Caspersen, MD, Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital, who discussed her personal experiences as a patient with COVID-19.
  • Shiwei Zhou, MD, University of Michigan.
  • Ved Gossain, MD, professor emeritus, Michigan State University and officer-at-large on the SPS Governing Council.
  • Louis Weinstein, MD, immediate past chair of the SPS Governing Council moderated the program. 


"The future of aging and its impact on health care: If we live healthier, can we live longer?"

This session assessed recent estimates of upper limits to human longevity.

  • Speaker: S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Moderator: Jenny Boyer, MD, JD, PhD, chair-elect of the SPS Governing Council.

The SPS Governing Council met June 5 to review House of Delegates (HOD) resolutions and reports related to senior physician issues, including the two SPS resolutions below:

  • Resolution 111: Towards Prevention of Hearing-Loss Associated Cognitive Impairment
  • Resolution 602: Timely Promotion and Assistance in Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives

James Milam, MD, AMPAC Board of Directors, provided an AMPAC update. The Assembly Meeting included discussion of SPS business items and future activities.
